Mourne Cup Winners 2012

Mourne Cup Winners 2012

Friday, 8 June, 2012

Ballyclare Colts under 11's travelled to Co.Down for their end of year trip and to participate in the Mourne Cup 2012 against Annalong Rovers, Tollymore and Killough. The weather looked like it was going to do its best to spoil the weekend as it was torrential on the Friday night. However the boys did not let the rain spoil their trip and they enjoyed a 3-1 win against Killough on the Friday night. A hat trick from the seasons top scorer Scott Wilson saw them go top of their group as the other match was a draw.
Saturdays weather was much better and Ballyclare started the day well against Tollymore only to let in a late goal after Blanes opener in the first half. They were fortunate not to lose the match when an injury time winner was ruled off side, correctly so by the referee.
Their last match was against the team setting the early pace, Annalong Rovers. This team looked very strong and they had won their first match 5-0 before meeting the Colts. Annalong took an early lead when playing against the wind but Ballyclare dug in and kept it 1-0 at half time. After the break Ballyclare played some great football with Lucca and Blane causing problems down the left, one such attack resulting in an equaliser from Blane who was really growing into the tournament. As the half went on it was very even but a late goal from Annalong meant that the defeat left Ballyclare in second place in the group. This was still enough to qualify them for the final and it was to be a rematch against Annalong.
Ballyclare prepared better for this match and started the final very quickly. Goals in the first half from Blane and Scott Wilson were little more than they deserved as they held the lead at half time. Some good defending from Christopher Nesbitt as well as some hard work from Adam, Thomas and Colin in the middle kept the game tight. Annalong equalised to make it a nervous last 5 minutes, but with only a couple of minutes left the ball fell to Jordan Hughes to make it 3-1 and give the trophy to Ballyclare.
It was all round a great weekend with the victory nothing more than they deserved for the football they played. Annalong played their part and it looks like a good friendship between the clubs has been formed.
The Colts coaches would like the thank the players and parents who travelled down and a special mention to the Ballyclare ASDA who supported the team by supplying drinks and snacks which were much appreciated by all the boys. It was a great way to finish the season and may have started a regular event if feedback is to be believed from the clubs involved.
